It’s totally impossible to ignore the burgeoning growth of artificial intelligence (AI). It’s everywhere, permeating almost every facet of our lives, at home and at work.
While this is daunting for many people, including me, this technological tidal wave brings with it a host of new opportunities, not only to save time but also to assist in improving our effectiveness in many ways.
I used the quietude of the recent festive season to learn more about AI, and my eyes are now open to its amazing power and myriad ways in which it can help us unlock new levels of efficiency.
As part of my learning process, I decided to test ChatGPT, one of the first AI tools I became aware of. Posing as a young, inexperienced farmer, whom I named James, I asked it some questions to which I already knew the answers.
The results
James: I’m growing tomatoes, but small white flies are damaging the plants. What can I do?
ChatGPT: You have a whitefly infestation.
Here’s a step-by-step solution:
1. Natural predators. If you have a source, introduce insects like ladybugs or lacewings, which feed on whiteflies.
2. Sticky traps. Use sticky traps near your plants to catch the flies.
3. Neem oil spray. Mix neem oil and a drop of dish soap and spray on the underside of leaves every five to seven days.
4. Crop rotation. Avoid planting tomatoes in the same spot every season.
5. Inspect regularly. Check weekly for signs of pests, and repeat treatment as necessary.
James: My tractor won’t start. What could be wrong?
Chat GPT: There could be several reasons.
Troubleshoot step-by-step as below:
1. Battery. Flat battery? Check the voltage with a multimeter; check terminals and, if necessary, clean with a mixture of baking soda and water.
2. Fuel. Check the fuel level in the tank and top us as necessary; check the fuel filter and, if necessary, clean or replace.
3. Starter motor. When you turn the key, if you hear a clicking sound, the starter motor is the problem. Call a qualified mechanic for assistance.
4. Air filter. Inspect the air filter and replace if dirty.
5. Ignition wiring. Inspect wiring for loose connections or damage.
James: How can I create a maintenance plan to keep my tractor in top shape?
ChatGPT:
Here’s a step-by-step plan:
1. Daily. Check engine oil level before work and top up if necessary; inspect coolant level and ensure there are no leaks; check tyre pressure and condition.
2. Weekly. Inspect and clean the air filter; lubricate all grease points.
3. Monthly. Check battery terminals; check belts and hoses for tension and wear; check level of hydraulic fluid and inspect for leaks.
4. Seasonal. Change engine oil, fuel filter and hydraulic filters; flush coolant system and ensure the radiator is clean; before storage clean thoroughly and disconnect battery.
5. Records: Log all maintenance.
James: How do I get Mike, a highly motivated junior manager, to reduce his aggressive behaviour?
ChatGPT:
Here’s a step-by-step approach to address Mike’s behaviour constructively:
1. Observe and record. Note specific incidents where Mike’s behaviour affects his staff.
2. Hold a private conversation. Choose a calm time to create a safe space for open dialogue and speak with Mike confidentially.
3. Give constructive feedback. For example, “Mike, your leadership skills and problem-solving are great, but your tone sometimes comes across as aggressive, which affects team morale and performance.”
5. Offer support and suggest solutions. Encourage Mike to listen actively and acknowledge his team’s input; to use positive language to motivate rather than criticise his team; and to pause and reset when feeling frustrated; then recommend leadership training or a conflict management workshop.
6. Set goals and follow up. Agree on clear behaviour-improvement goals and schedule a follow-up discussion to monitor progress and provide further guidance.
7. Reinforce progress. Celebrate improvements, no matter how small.
Verdict
Well, there it is. Appreciate that these responses weren’t from a flesh-and-blood human being but a machine. Incredible!
